The Board of Directors of I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) is looking for its next Executive Director to build upon and expand the organization’s regional impact of making San Diego a better place to live. The Executive Director, reporting to the Board of Directors, is responsible for the administrative leadership, fundraising and external affairs of the organization. Passionate about environmental issues, the Executive Director mobilizes a total staff of 25, oversees an agency budget of $1.5 million, and possesses political and business acumen, ensuring the organization is a true partner to local governments and corporations in the region.

About I Love A Clean San Diego

Founded as the San Diego War Against Litter Committee (WALC) in 1954, ILACSD has worked to improve the health and beauty of San Diego for over 60 years. In the 1970s “I Love A Clean San Diego” was the slogan for the organization’s anti-litter campaign and in 1980 it became the organization’s name. In 1989, ILACSD merged with the San Diego Ecology Center, joining two leading environmental organizations to better serve the community, under one name. ILACSD continues to be San Diego’s leading environmental organization in San Diego County connecting over 60,000 youth and adults with the local environment each year. Requirements:

  • 4-year college degree required; environmental studies or related field of study preferred
  • Familiarity with the San Diego communities and their environmental partners
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental challenges on a local and national level
  • Minimum 5 years experience at the helm of a similar sized non-profit organization, private business, or public agency department or serving as a Development or Programs Director in an equal or larger sized non-profit organization
  • Experience obtaining donations from private and corporate sources
  • Familiarity negotiating and executing governmental contracts
  • Minimum 5 years experience leading a team of 5 or more individuals; emphasis placed on being able to articulate specific leadership approaches used to mobilize and inspire teams to exceed organizational goals and create accountability
  • Experience hiring staff including supervisor and manager positions
  • Experience in environmental program implementation highly desired
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to speak passionately in the community about the organization and our mission
  • Ability to effectively use a personal computer, Microsoft Office Suite, and information technology systems

Areas of Responsibility

Fundraising Leadership & Strategy: 50%

  • Identifies and pursues long- and short-term funding opportunities to meet the needs of the organization
  • Engages in fundraising and development activities to secure new sources of funding from government, corporate, individual contributors and private foundations
  • Stewards relationships with current stakeholders and supporters to renew funding and oversees the strategy to increase those supporters’ contributions over time
  • Sets and monitors fundraising performance parameters in line with the strategic direction and consistent with development policies and private grant requirements
  • Responsible for oversight of all ILACSD grants and contracts
  • Provide thought leadership and strategy to the Director of Philanthropy and Marketing

External Affairs & Marketing: 30%

  • Represents ILACSD at community meetings and partners with other community and environmental non-profit groups to strengthen the organization’s reach and resources to advocate for zero waste and pollution prevention methods and measures
  • Set long-term strategies for marketing campaigns and communications to achieve strategic objectives of the organization
  • Be an external local and national presence that publishes and communicates program results with an emphasis on the successes of our programs for greater regional and national exposure
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communication strategies to create a stronger brand
  • Familiarity with CRM systems and can make strategic recommendations

Administrative & Board Leadership: 20%

  • Ultimately responsible for auditing, budgeting, financial analysis, capital asset, and payroll in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, board policies and procedures, and all other applicable rules and guidelines
  • Serves as the chief inspiration officer, setting the tone and strategy for employee engagement, accountability, and succession planning within our multi-generational team
  • Leads organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives
  • Responsible for providing information and recommendations to the Chair of the Board, Board Committees, and the Board of Directors in the creation of policies, programs, and strategic direction of the organization
  • Assists with Board member recruitment and takes part in board meetings and board committees
  • Assists in the development of current and long-term organizational goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures for ILACSD operations.  Establishes plans to achieve goals set by the Board of Directors and implements policies, with input from the Board of Directors
  • Programmatic: provide leadership to staff to ensure that ILACSD moves forward with innovative solutions for San Diego, and that our programs support and reflect the vision and mission of our organization, especially in quality control and managing growth
  • Directly supervise the Senior Director of Operations, Senior Director of Finance, Director of Marketing & Philanthropy, and Administrative Assistant

Position Requirements

  • Be able and willing to work flexible hours as needed, which may include weekends or evenings
  • Reliable transportation; ability and willingness to travel

Compensation and Benefits

  • Full-time exempt position
  • Salary range of $110k – $130k commensurate with experience and opportunity for performance based annual bonus
  • Medical, dental and vision plan
  • Mileage reimbursement ($0.56 or current CA reimbursement rate)
  • Paid time off (PTO) plan
  • Generous paid holiday schedule
  • Office closure between Christmas and New Year’s Day
  • Hybrid in-office/remote work schedule dependent on position
  • 403b program with match opportunity after 90 days
