Volunteer Program Coordinator

The Volunteer Program Coordinator will support the Community Engagement Department by coordinating logistics for the organization’s monthly cleanup and self-led cleanup programs, as well as supporting the organization’s robust volunteer program. This role will manage, foster, and steward volunteer and partnership opportunities while leading the following community programs: community cleanups, Adopt-A-Beach, Storm Drain Stenciling, Independent Cleanups, general volunteer inquiries, and the Volunteer Program. Additionally, the Volunteer Program Coordinator will directly supervise a Volunteer Program Intern with support tasks. The position will emphasize program recognition, access, growth, and involvement in each of San Diego County’s diverse communities.

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Non-Exempt
RATE: $18.00 per hour, and mileage reimbursement at current CA rate for event travel only
SCHEDULE: Typically works a Tuesday – Saturday schedule to accommodate weekend cleanup and outreach events – weekday schedule is flexible


• Coordinate and lead all aspects of ILACSD’s community volunteer events, attending approximately 2-4 weekend cleanups per month
• Manage the Adopt-A-Beach, Storm Drain Stenciling, and Independent cleanup volunteer programs, including overseeing program budgets, volunteer correspondence and recruitment, supply preparation and inventory, program evaluation, and reporting
• Manage two annual Storm Drain Stenciling Day events, including event planning, volunteer recruitment, supply inventory, and reporting
• Support the strategic growth, maintenance, and management of the organization’s Volunteer Program
• Correspond with volunteers to encourage participation with I Love A Clean San Diego’s programs and events
• Maintain and manage data in the volunteer management database (Samaritan)
• Utilize the department’s ArcGIS maps and systems for respective programs
• Track and utilize metrics and write reports for respective grants, programs, and contracts within given deadlines
• Support the Volunteer Program Manager to manage and complete department specific contracts & tasks
• Oversee the purchase, inventory, storage and distribution of volunteer supplies, including training and supervision of support staff
• Work with the Marketing department to promote programs, including collateral (creation of flyers, blurbs, Facebook events, etc.) and provide program content for I Love A Clean San Diego’s website
• Foster positive relationships with community groups, local media, elected officials, and other parties who can assist I Love A Clean San Diego in fulfilling its mission and award funding
• Professional and accurate representation of I Love A Clean San Diego
• Other duties as assigned

• Ability to work weekend events
• Proficient with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Google Drive, Slack, Zoom
• Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required
• Must be able to lift 30-50 LBS
• Requires sitting, standing, walking long distances at cleanups and events
• Reliable transportation


• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Effective written and spoken communication skills for diverse audiences
• Ability to troubleshoot event challenges efficiently and confidently
• Ability to work well with subordinates, peers, supervisors, partners, and external stakeholders
• Comfortable presenting in front of large groups
• Commitment to working in a team environment
• Knowledge of San Diego County and its environmental challenges
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
• ArcGIS knowledge a bonus
• Previous volunteer coordination preferred
