About the Position

The Waste Recovery Program Volunteer Intern will support the Waste Recovery Department with tasks associated with the Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste database, WasteFreeSD.org, and other recycling programs. This position reports directly to the Recycling Programs Manager. I Love A Clean San Diego internships are available to college students working towards course credits.

Type of Employment: Unpaid Internship

Internship Dates: Flexible

Time Commitment: 6-12 hours per week with occasional weekend events

General Duties May Include:

  • Assist with creating and posting content on WasteFreeSD.org such as general recycling information, and zero waste initiatives
  • Update and organize content on WasteFreeSD.org
  • Research recycling and donations centers in San Diego County
  • Research and compile waste reduction and repurpose tips
  • Research legislative laws concerning recycling and waste issues in the region
  • Assist with the marketing and promotion of WasteFreeSD.org
  • Support on-site waste audits at schools and local businesses
  • Support the development of waste audit reports
  • Drives to various locations within the county to pick up school recycling program materials
  • Assists with residential and business outreach pertaining to food scrap recovery
  • Foster positive relationships with residents and businesses who can assist I Love A Clean San Diego in fulfilling its mission
  • Professional and accurate representation of I Love A Clean San Diego
  • Assist other programs/departments as needed including general office tasks and outreach events, as needed

Position Requirements:         

  • Utilize internship in association with college course credits
  • High level of organization and attention to detail, savvy with technology
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Multi-tasker and quick learner
  • Ability to work well independently and on a team
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word
  • Reliable transportation
  • Website experience and/or game design experience a plus
  • Knowledge of environmental challenges facing San Diego County, especially waste and recycling issues
  • Vaccinated for COVID-19
  • Knowledge of San Diego region, preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
