CountyWide Cleanups

Discover the heart of community stewardship with I Love A Clean San Diego at our two countywide cleanup events! Creek to Bay in April to celebrate Earth week and Coastal Cleanup Day in September as part of a much larger international effort organized by the Coastal Commission and Ocean Conservancy. Explore the impact of our collective efforts by checking out the impressive totals from our recent events below. Together, we’re making a lasting difference in our beautiful San Diego County! For more details on this year’s Creek to Bay event and and Coastal Cleanup Day, click below.

If you would like to join the community of businesses that support this event, please contact Steve Morris at smorris@cleansd.org.

On Coastal Cleanup Day, our dedicated volunteers categorize collected litter, contributing vital data to the world’s largest marine debris database. Unsurprisingly, the top three culprits littering San Diego County are all forms of plastic!

  1. Cigarette Butts (Plastic Filters): Did you know TerraCycle offers a free program to transform discarded cigarette butts into park benches? It’s a small act that can make a big difference in our environment.
  2. Food Wrappers: Imagine the positive rippled effect of crafting your favorite snacks at home and eliminating unnecessary packaging altogether. Let’s embrace sustainable alternatives and reduce our ecological footprint.
  3. Bottle Caps: Here’s a recycling tip – bottle caps can only be recycled if reattached to their original bottles. If not, they’re too small for residential recycling services to process. Lets ensure these caps find their way back to their bottles for a greener tomorrow.

Here are some of our accomplishments in 2014:WasteFreeSD.org: Our one of a kind hotline and database, WasteFreeSD.org fielded close to 14,000 requests for recycling information. Without this vital resource, residents would be left with nowhere to turn for recycling and proper disposal of hazardous items. This diverts countless amounts of waste from San Diego’s landfills, and prevents illegal dumping in our communities. Community Cleanups: We coordinated more than 28,000 volunteers last year to remove nearly 500,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from San Diego’s beaches, waterways, canyons, and parks. This debris is a threat to public health, wildlife, and the natural ecosystems in San Diego. Environmental Education: We empowered over 31,000 youth and adults in San Diego to make a positive impact on their environment. We know that youth hold the key to the environmental future of our community and our planet. Education provides inspiration to change their behaviors, helping minimize our community’s ecological footprint.
“I would like to share with you a terrific experience. Over several months, my family and I have been in contact with the [WasteFreeSD Hotline Operator] to learn the best methods of disposing of household hazardous wastes...The [WasteFreeSD Hotline Operator] has been so thorough and helpful to us with this project. Their knowledge and ability to explain the process are superb and I just wanted to share this with you.”

“It’s a great way to give back to the community...Like a lot of people, we’re concerned about climate change and doing what we can for the environment.”
