Keep It Together! Sustainable Landscaping Webinar

Whether your gardening thumb is as green as grass or is more of a blackish-gray color (but getting greener with time!), sustainable landscaping can be an intimidating undertaking. This month, we are breaking it down. We will be sharing planting best-practices, ways that we can control erosion within our own backyards, and gardening habits that we can avoid or adopt to ensure we are not accidentally contributing to the pollution of our waterways!  Learn more about how engaging with our land intentionally help keeps it “together.”

Join I Love A Clean San Diego in partnership with the County of San Diego as we cover sustainable landscaping practices as they relate to our waterways. This event is free to attend and open to all! Please register to receive the link to join.

One Room At A Time: A Zero Waste Family Interview with Kim Castillo

One Room At A Time: A Zero Waste Family Interview with Kim Castillo

Did you know that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, Americans throw away 25% more trash than during the rest of the year??  While recycling is an amazing practice for individuals and families to use to reduce the amount of waste they are sending to the landfill, it is not the only solution.  Considering the significant amount of waste that we are producing and the valuable resources that went into making it, why not take a closer look this holiday season at what we can do to reduce the amount of waste we are producing to begin with?

Join I Love A Clean San Diego in partnership with the County of San Diego for this free info session on how families can begin to minimize their waste production, even around the holidays!  We will be featuring guest-speaker Kim Castillo, who is a mother of two and a local eco-company business owner- all while helping to run her family’s farm.

Kim will share her experience and insight in transitioning to a minimal waste lifestyle in a manageable and inclusive way for her whole family.  She will also let us in on some of her favorite zero-waste gift ideas and hosting tips for the holidays!

Clean Canyons for a Clean Coast Virtual Cleanup – City Heights

city_heights_canyon

Did you know that 80% of coastal debris stems from inland sources? Protect San Diego’s canyons and waterways at I Love A Clean San Diego’s Clean Canyons for a Clean Coast virtual cleanup in City Heights! We will be working with our friends at San Diego Canyonlands and San Diego District 9 Community Cleanups to support our volunteers where they need it most. Hosted in partnership with the California Coastal Commission’s Adopt-A-Beach Program, this cleanup will help remove litter and debris from entering our oceans by collecting it at an inland location. With your help, we can eliminate trash and waste before they pollute our ocean and help protect and preserve the natural state of canyons in City Heights!

City Heights residents will sign up on the Community Hub as a household (or individuals) to walk their block OR at Litter Hotspots in one of the 16 City Heights neighborhoods to clean up. Please clean up only in your neighborhood and at your requested location to avoid gathering and stay safe. Please refrain from participating if you do not live in City Heights to limit external travel and the spread of COVID-19.

As a virtual cleanup, there will not be a main meeting point – you will simply clean up in your neighborhood or Litter Hotspot between 8am and 11am. Note that this is a street cleanup only; do not enter into nearby canyons as volunteer activity in City of San Diego canyons is currently restricted. Volunteers will be asked to report their cleanup details via a simple online survey after the event so we can track each household’s impact.

We provide community service hours and Letters of Appreciation for volunteers. This is a great opportunity for students and families to learn ways to protect our local environment! This event also qualifies for the VOLUNTEER rocker in the 2020 patch set! Details on how to request these items will be sent after the event to registered volunteers.

Supplies will not be provided for this event. Volunteers are asked to use their own reusable and repurposed items such as buckets, grocery bags, work/garden/dish gloves, and refillable water bottles to promote zero waste practices and help us in our mission to have a zero waste, litter free and environmentally engaged San Diego region!

Registration available on our Community Hub – get ready and activate or create your account and register for your neighborhood using the register button below!

Creek to Bay 2020 Packing Party

Our 18th Annual Creek to Bay cleanup is on Saturday, April 25th from 9am-12pm! At last year’s event, 4,900 volunteers removed over 108,970 pounds of litter and debris from 117 sites throughout San Diego! This incredible impact was made possible by volunteers like you at the Packing Party last March, who assembled the supplies for each of those 117 sites in just four days.

In preparation for this year’s cleanup, we are looking for volunteers for our Packing Party to assist in assembling boxes of supplies to make this 18th Annual Creek to Bay cleanup a huge success. Volunteers will report to one of two locations in Kearny Mesa: our new office located at 5797 Chesapeake Court, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92123 (Thursday 3/12), or the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center located at 3170 Armstrong Street, San Diego, CA 92111 (Friday 3/13 and 3/16-3/18).

Tasks include counting and bundling supplies, packing boxes with specific quantities of items, double checking the packed boxes to ensure all of the supplies are there, and helping load the packed boxes into our truck and back to our office. Some heavy lifting may be needed, but is not required. Volunteers will sit, stand, bend, and walk. Volunteers aged 14 and up are preferred, as attention to detail and counting are a crucial part of this assembly.

Whether you sign up for a full day or just a few hours, we would love your help! A minimum of 2 hours per day is required. We will offer service forms for those in need, and this opportunity is available for court-ordered hours. If you or anyone you know is interested in helping, please sign up by emailing Jackie Blumenthal with the date(s) and time(s) you would like to volunteer at jblumenthal@cleansd.org or (619) 787-2604.
