YOUTH EDUCATION MANAGER

The Youth Education Manager shall be responsible for I Love A Clean San Diego’s youth education efforts, including K-12 classroom presentations to schools and youth groups across San Diego County. Duties include managing full and part-time Education staff, overseeing presentation scheduling, implementation of education contract requirements, monitoring contract compliance, curriculum maintenance and development, and administrative duties. The Youth Education Manager plays the role of ultimate accountability for successful execution of youth education contract and grant goals and requirements within the Education department.

REPORTS TO: Director of Education

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time, Non-Exempt

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Oversee all components of ILACSD’s youth education efforts, including curriculum development, planning, research, marketing, scheduling, presentation delivery, program evaluation, updates, and supply purchasing
  • Directly manage two full-time Youth Education Coordinators, one full-time Youth Programs Coordinator, and up to three part-time Environmental Educators, including coaching, performance assessment, workload management, attention to staff retention, administrative tasks, and hiring
    • Observe youth education staff quarterly at minimum to provide assessment
    • Design and conduct regular trainings to ensure professional development and relevancy of youth education staff
  • Oversee marketing, scheduling, and delivery of 900+ educational presentations annually to youth audiences
    • Lead curriculum development
    • Monitor scheduling progress to ensure achievement of department goals and requirements; flag and troubleshoot issues early
    • Ensure coordinators and educators have systems in place for the maintenance and care of department supplies, inventory, purchasing, and proper and timely storage
    • Field unique requests for customized educational experiences; assess for mission fit, viability, and capacity while demonstrating excellent customer service
    • Uphold ILACSD’s existing reputation for high-quality youth education programming
  • Oversee tracking and reporting on contract and grant programs within ILACSD’s Education Department
  • Meet with funders as needed to provide progress updates, propose new ideas, and weigh in on program development
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, including schools, community groups/organizations, clubs, civic organizations, and governmental agencies
  • Identify and pursue creative opportunities for outreach to expand ILACSD’s reach and to accomplish goals
  • Work cross-departmentally to provide Youth Education staff support for Education Department events (Kids’ Ocean Day, Zero Waste Fair, workshops, webinars) and other events (outreach booths, cleanups)
  • Develop team plan for slower months (summer)
  • Establish processes and procedures as needed for effective team communication and achievement of deliverables
  • Assist in creating annual operating budget
  • Stay current with Next Generation Science Standards and Environmental Principles & Concepts
  • Deliver presentations as a backup if needed

OTHER

  • Attend community meetings when appropriate to further expand organization’s presence in the community
  • Other duties as assigned to support the ILACSD team

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Reliable transportation; ability and willingness to travel to various locations within the county
  • Ability to work weekends and/or evenings
  • Microsoft Office proficiency (especially PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
  • Ability to pass a background check prior to employment
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Teaching/youth education experience; full range of K-12 students preferred; experience in environmental education strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to educate, inspire, and empower behavior change among community members of all demographics and groups of all sizes
  • Effective communication skills for diverse audiences, including strong writing, public speaking, and classroom management skills
  • Supervisory/management experience; experience managing large teams preferred
  • Ability to handle confidential information tactfully; exercise discretion and independent judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to assess staff performance and deliver actionable feedback
  • Ability to troubleshoot challenges efficiently and confidently
  • Commitment to working in a team environment
  • Experience developing curriculum for a formal or informal teaching setting
  • Project management experience
  • Ability to proactively and independently engage multiple, simultaneous projects and requirements/goals
  • High tolerance for ambiguity
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of stormwater pollution prevention, waste diversion, and zero waste lifestyle
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to live a zero waste lifestyle

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
• $22 per hour
• Mileage reimbursement ($0.58 or current CA reimbursement rate)
